Welcome new students!

Dear student, welcome to Poli!

Among the countless factors that shape our choices, one is the expectation of how accepted and at home we will feel in a certain place, and how much that place will help us grow while respecting and inspiring us. The Politecnico di Torino is a place where you grow, and we want it to be a place where you feel welcomed. Growth is never easy. Challenges are part of every career, every passion.

You have chosen Engineering, even though today the number of women who choose STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is still low (though rising!), and society is still slow to fully accept the figure of women scientists (here too, change is happening!).

The path you’ve chosen proves your motivation. It’s a path that many young women before you have already completed with great success. And it’s a path we will walk together! At times you may feel you’re not good enough, or have doubts, but we are here to remind you that we can be so many things. This is why WeAreHERe was born – we are here, we are her – the community of women engineering students.

WeAreHERe is the correction of a wrong narrative: the idea that engineering is not a job for women. WeAreHERe is this, and much more. But above all, WeAreHERe is us. It’s you. A network of women, of students who are living this wonderful experience.

We already had our first in-person meeting on September 23nd, and we’ll have many more throughout the academic year. These will be wonderful opportunities to meet other students like you, and to grow together as a community.

Among this year’s activities is the mentoring project: every freshman can request a mentor – an older student who chose the same path of study as you and can help you take your first steps in this new world of engineering.
